The Trump administration says some approved childhood vaccines need better studies. Scientists disagree

When the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on 5 January it was slashing the number of recommended childhood vaccines from 17 to 11, it pointed to “peer” nations that routinely administer fewer shots, Denmark in particular—although both U.S. and Danish scientists have pointed out that the countries aren’t comparable. But CDC also cited another reason to bring down the number of recommended jabs: It says some vaccines haven’t been tested in “proper” placebo-controlled trials, widely considered the best type of medical evidence.

Many scientists say these claims (now being made by the CDC), which echo statements by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are inaccurate. “The vaccines now under attack were licensed using rigorous, globally accepted standards; they work, they are safe, and they have saved countless lives,” says Marion Gruber, who from 2011 to 2021 led the FDA division that oversees vaccines. There’s no scientific justification for retesting them, says Gruber, who’s now a vaccine consultant, and new placebo-controlled trials would pose huge ethical problems because they would expose some participants to preventable diseases.

The CDC’s song and dance about the lack of placebos in vaccine testing is born of a flawed agenda and deep seated ignorance rather than the science or best clinical research practices.

RFK Jr primarily follows and pushes conspiracy theories to include those from which he has long and actively profiteered. He has currently stacked the CDC with ‘advisors’ who primarily are fellow anti-vaccine and anti-science conspiracy theorists. Those of his ‘advisors’ who do hold MDs are largely engaging in grossly irresponsible behavior which equates with malpractice and clear ethical violations.

RFK Jr has absolutely no science, medical or research training and should literally not be taken seriously by anybody. Nothing he recommends should be followed even if there is accidental legitimacy in certain other references. RFK Jr is, fundamentally, practicing medicine without a license.

The incredible damage he’s doing almost single-handedly to our Public Health system, vaccine science and, in particular, childhood vaccination schedules are together more than annoying - but deadly. RFK Jr now leads the Department of Death by Childhood Vaccine Preventable Disease.

The rates of measles, fundamentally eradicated decades ago in United States, is surging to levels not seen in a very long time both nationally and internationally. Measles epidemics are being seen globally and in the US, with a common theme of it being primary among children who are unvaccinated. And measles is a very dangerous disease despite RFK Jr’s nonsense.

RFK Jr’s deadly impact has not been limited to the United States. Check the facts about the RFK Jr’s contribution to a deadly measles outbreak in Samoa in 2019. RFK Jr gave false testimony at his confirmation hearings to include denying the impact of his contact in Samoa which included advocating against vaccinations and for irrelevant and ineffective, ‘treatments’ to include the use of vitamins A and C.

Experts saw Samoa's plunging vaccination rates as a crisis. RFK Jr. saw an opportunity.

On Nov. 19, as the deaths neared 20, Kennedy wrote a letter to Malielegaoi, baselessly suggesting that the crisis was caused not by low (measles) vaccination rates but by a hodgepodge of possibilities, including ineffective or defective vaccines and newly vaccinated children “shedding” the virus to unvaccinated ones.

When Samoan officials seemingly ignored his letter, Kennedy reiterated the claims publicly on Facebook, according to a screenshot posted by an Australian anti-vaccine group, and called the government’s response “suspicious.”

Months after Kennedy’s visit, the question of what would happen to Samoa’s unvaccinated babies was answered. A measles outbreak swept the country, sickening thousands and killing 83, mostly small children.

As measles raged, Kennedy stayed connected to the island, writing to the prime minister to raise concerns about the vaccine and providing medical guidance to a local anti-vaccine activist who posted false claims about the vaccination campaign and promoted unproven alternative cures.

Measles can lead to disability and death. It can lead to encephalitis (brain swelling). Measles can readily cause pneumonia which is the leading cause of measles death in young children. Meningococcal vaccines, which protect against particularly gruesome and high-risk disease such as meningitis and sepsis, are being taken off the table. So too, has routine vaccination against hepatitis B, rotavirus, and COVID-19 against the explicit advice of real medical professionals and researchers.

Instead, RFK Jr’s recommendations seem to be more dictated based on the brain parasite previously in his head and his bottom line.

Along with when surgeons realized the need to wash their hands between patients, vaccinations are probably Public Health’s number one most remarkable invention over past centuries saving countless lives. In fact, the early smallpox vaccination, which George Washington insisted his entire Continental Army receive, is given credit by Historians to helping us win the Revolutionary War.

As a result of vaccination, smallpox and polio have been eradicated with other childhood vaccine preventable disease dramatically reduced and controlled. Measles had been considered eradicated in the US as of 2000 but has now surged driven by anti-vaccination lies, conspiracy theories and organizations. Is polio next on the list for a resurgence? I have to wonder how many of the current anti-vax crowd have seen rooms full of children with polio only alive for being in an iron lung?

The MMR vaccine is extremely safe and most often provides lifetime protection. Working with children as I have for many decades, I certainly have been exposed to measles but have never experienced an infection. And after receiving all required COVID vaccinations, I can comfortably say that I am still alive and have never contracted COVID

The organization founded by RKF Jr, the Children Health Defense which he also brought into Samoa at the time, has even dared put Andrew Wakefield on their fact free, anti-science anti-vax tour. Wakefield is the disgraced one time MD who lost his license to practice medicine in the UK based on his deeply flawed, grossly unethical studies, the first in 1998 and second in 2002, which falsely labeled the MMR vaccination as a high risk for autism.

Two studies by Wakefield were cited early on by those claiming that the MMR vaccine causes autism. Both studies are critically flawed.

Wakefield’s now fully retracted studies, whose co-authors have long since removed their names, sadly remain directly responsible for hugely reduced vaccination rates and the linked return of measles and other childhood vaccination preventable diseases.

To repeat....the childhood vaccine schedule is very safe and extremely effective. And the MMR vaccination is also extremely safe. It is absolutely and unconditionally not connected to autism or autism’s increased prevalence. But children who do not receive it, or do not receive other vaccines for primary childhood vaccine preventable diseases, are at risk for spreading disease, disability and death

RFK Jr’s legacy will be still more unnecessary death and disability left in his wake.

Get Vaccinated. Talk to your MD; to your child’s pediatrician rather than considering the deeply flawed ‘recommendations’ coming from CDC and RFK Jr. Don’t help RFK Jr Make Polio Great Again.
